From Otago to Waikato – Why We Moved North to Join the Waikato Farming Community

Moving regions is never a small decision.
Moving regions to take on a rural contracting business is even less so.

Earlier this year we moved from the Taieri Plain in Otago to the Waikato to take over Computerised Bulk Spreaders.

For many people the first question is simple:

Why move from Otago to Waikato?

For us, the answer comes down to three things. The strength of Waikato agriculture, the opportunity in the business, and the people already part of it.

The Waikato is the heart of New Zealand dairy farming

Waikato is one of the most productive dairy regions in the country.

The scale of farming here, and the level of professionalism across the sector, is impressive. Farms are well run, pasture management is strong, and there is a deep network of rural businesses supporting farmers to get the most from their land.

For a fertiliser application business, it’s a region where good service and reliability genuinely matter.

When farmers are managing grazing rotations, pasture covers, and fertiliser programmes, they need contractors who turn up when they say they will and do the job properly.

That kind of environment suits us.

The opportunity to build on a strong business

Computerised Bulk Spreaders already had a solid reputation in the district.

Peter and Anne built the business over many seasons by focusing on something straightforward: turning up, doing the job well, and looking after their customers.

When the opportunity came up to take the business on, it wasn’t about starting from scratch. It was about continuing what had already been built.

Importantly, the team that customers know is staying the same.

Mike and Stu are still the ones in the trucks, and Peter will remain involved through autumn as part of the planned handover.

From a farmer’s perspective, very little changes.

Farming communities value relationships

One of the things we’ve always appreciated about agriculture is the importance of relationships.

Contracting businesses don’t succeed because of clever marketing. They succeed because farmers trust the people turning up at the gate.

That trust is built over seasons.

It’s built by doing what you said you would do, by communicating clearly, and by respecting the land and the people working it.

Those values are just as strong in the Waikato as they are in Otago.

Looking forward

Moving from the South Island to the Waikato has been a big step for us personally.

But it’s also an exciting one.

We’re proud to be continuing a business that already plays a role supporting local farms, and we’re grateful for the trust Peter has placed in us to take it forward.

Our focus is simple.

Right product. Right place. Season after season.

And if you have work coming up, we’re ready when you are.
